Pilot Balloons / Ceiling Balloons / PIBAL

Pilot Balloons, also known as Ceiling Balloons or PIBALs, are a trusted solution for meteorologists seeking to measure cloud base heights, wind speed, and wind direction up to 15,000 meters. With over 50 years of expertise, PAWAN is a leading supplier of pilot balloons for both Indian and international meteorological agencies. Usually, they do not carry an appreciable load and are therefore considerably smaller than radiosonde balloons. Night-time pilot-balloon ascents may require a light source, such as a lamp powered by a small electric battery. Pilot observations can also be carried out nowadays with an instrument attached to a balloon that has only a navigation device for wind observation, without measurement capability for the thermodynamic variables. This instrument is called a pilotsonde.

The ascent of these weather balloons is tracked using optical instruments or with the help of a radiosonde. The smallest size meteorological balloon recommended with a payload attached is PR-45/50 (45-50gm). Pilot/Ceiling type meteorological balloons are a very important tool in upper air observations.

In business for over 50 years today PAWAN is a leading pilot balloon manufacturer and supplier for the Indian and International Meteorological Community.

SIZES AVAILABLE : PR-10, PR-20, PR-27, PR-30, PR-32, PR-45, PR-50 PR-70, CPR-100, and CPR-150.

Features of PAWAN Pilot Balloons

Accurate Wind and Cloud Base Measurements:
Pilot balloons are essential for determining wind direction, speed, and the height of cloud bases. During daylight hours, these balloons are tracked using theodolites or pilotsondes for precise measurements. PAWAN’s balloons provide reliable data crucial for weather forecasting and atmospheric studies.

Colour Options for Enhanced Visibility:
To ensure optimal tracking in various weather conditions, our pilot balloons are available in red, black, and white. These can also be manufactured in custom colours for a minimum ordered quantity (MOQ). These colours improve visibility against different sky backgrounds, making them easier to follow with optical tracking instruments.

Optical Tracking and Pilotsonde Compatibility:
The ascent of PAWAN’s ceiling balloons can be tracked using a theodolite, a specialized optical instrument, or with pilotsonde-equipped tracking, allowing for accurate upper air data collection in real-time.

Recommended Sizes for Payloads:
For small payloads, we recommend our PR-45/50 (45-50gm) as the smallest suitable pilot balloon for carrying equipment like pilotsondes or other tracking devices. However in some instances windsondes have been used with our PR-20(20gm) pilot balloon.

Available Balloon Sizes:

Our pilot balloons come in a range of sizes to meet different operational needs, including:

  • PR-10, PR-20, PR-27, PR-30, PR-32, PR-45, PR-50 PR-70, CPR-100, and CPR-150.
