Pilot Balloons, also known as Ceiling Balloons or PIBALs, are a trusted solution for meteorologists seeking to measure cloud base heights, wind speed, and wind direction up to 15,000 meters. Pilot observations can also be carried out nowadays with an instrument attached to a balloon that has only a navigation device for wind observation, without measurement capability for the thermodynamic variables. This instrument is called a pilotsonde.
